Be 100% Sure About Your Camping Knives
Category: Knife TipsI sure enjoy camping. I would never confess to the type to really rough it. But, I do enjoy spending a couple of nights in a tent and cooking up my meals over a camp fire.
Camp fire cooking makes the entire experience. I take pleasure in sitting around the fire and carrying on with friends and family. The great part is figuring out new and unique meals to keep things exciting. You can only eat hot dogs and hamburgers for so many meals.
If you really want to go the extra mile in cooking up scrumptious camp fire food, you want to make sure that you bring the correct tools to make it happen. You don’t have to go crazy with this, but if you like to the cooking process, you will absolutely need to ensure that you have the right gear on hand.
Food storage is critical so you’ll want to ensure that you bring coolers and plenty of storage containers. Having freezer bags and tin foil will make things go a lot smoother too.
Make sure you bring a durable cutting board because I can swear to the fact that trying to cut up a fryer on the hood of your pickup truck is not a wise choice.
I’m a knife guy so I am serious about choosing my camping knives. I make sure to bring a camping knife or two with a good sharpening steel when I cook-out. There are a few imperative things that you will need to look into when choosing your camping knives.
I always bring two camping knives when I head out to camp. I like to go with a good four to six inch utility knife for wide-ranging tasks such as cutting up the chicken or slicing fat from that beef steak that I plan on throwing on the grill. You can decide on a serrated edge and that’s fine, but I like the plain blade for the fact that they are much simpler to sharpen and maintain.
The other type of camping knife that I commonly bring on my camping trip is a butcher knife. Now, I don’t plan to field dress any, but who knows when you are going to need a tougher blade than the utility knife of steak knife.
You should always bring steak knives when camping. Because if you intend on eating steak, I suspect that you will not want to turn it into a steak sandwich although that doesn’t sound too bad to me.
Enjoy your camping trip and make sure you make a list of all the camping items that you’ll need. And be picky about those camping knives.
Camping if definitely a mind relaxing past time.
Ensure your camping knife has the durability to become a survival knife if you get lost in the woods. You may find yourself using it to construct a shelter or something like that. It should have the durability to be hammered on with a rock.

Cool post. We used to always wrap complete dinners in foil and throw them in the fire. Always worked like a charm. I remember cooking chicken teriyaki on rice, stews, and a bunnch of other stuff that way.
As for a camping knife, good suggestion on length. A lot of guys think the bigger the better, and bring nothing short of a machete. A good 4 inch fixed blade with a full flat grind will be good enough for most people, and will be able to cover a wide range of tasks from cutting rope to slicing food. Something like this should be able to handle batoning through wood(about the most rugged survival tactic I can think of for a knife off the top of my head…used for constructing shelter and such as mentioned above).
Anyways, just wanted to add my .02 that bigger isn’t always better when it comes to a camping knife!
