Kanetsune Urushi, Japanese Precision

The Kanetsune Urushi is one of those knives that take your breath away. I don’t know if my little blog post will do it much justice, but don’t blame me for trying.
The Kanetsune Urushi has a traditional Japanese lacquer finish that is beyond words. The finish is well done and should last forever unless you plan on gutting pigs with it. Let’s not do that.

The knife handle is constructed from oak wood and has a metal hilt that is wrapped with black cord. This is all done with a master’s touch; very nice.

I don’t own one personally, yet. But, I’m leaning towards the Urushi to add to my little collection. It’s a beautiful knife and would make an excellent addition to my wall of blades. Thanks for stopping by once again. Before you go, here are a few of the Urushi stats.
- Blade Detail: Plain
- Blade Length (inches): 4.73
- Blade Material: Blue Steel, 15 Layer Damascus
- Carry System: Wooden Sheath
- Handle Material: Oak w/Black Cord
- Overall Length (inches): 9.45

Should the Law Prohibit Spanking? - A Fighting Knife Thought
Posted on November 27, 2007

I just read a story in the Boston Herald about a proposal by an Arlington nurse in Masachusetts to ban spanking and make it a prosecutable offense.
Why?
Is this theory based on facts that state children are so much better behaved these days that spanking is not necessary? I’ll let you decide on that one.
Or, does a good talking to solve the disciplinary problem negating the need for a spanking. Hmmmm…
My opinion; the law and the government should stay out of it. First, the law would ban spanking, then someone else would come up with a bright idea that a parent shouldn’t ground a child or scold a child because it is just way too mean and could harm the child’s feelings causing lifelong effects. Smart, huh.
I’m sure that there are a slew of methods and theories on how to discipline a child without spanking. If that works for a child, great. If not, spank him or her because I assure you, that works.
My parents didn’t hesitate to spank when I was a child, and I think I turned out alright. I don’t find myself curled up in the corner of a room shivering over the flashbacks of a corrective spanking. As a matter of fact, I believe spankings and discipline moulded me into a responsible teenager and later, an adult.
When I was a kid, I pushed the rules just like any kiddo. When I was around my parents, I was much more disciplined and minded immediately when told to do so. Why? Because I knew another warning would be followed by a spanking.
There were other members of my family that watched me at times and I can assure you, I pushed them even further because I knew that the worst that could happen with them was grounding or a scolding. I did not respect that. I feared that spanking and I did what I was told when I knew that was coming if I didn’t.
I see kids today that make my blood boil. I see them talk back to their parents, curse, run around like hellions, ignore pleads and threats from their parents and that is the mild stuff. The parents just look around embarrased after futile attempts to scold them and threaten them verbally. Spank them people! It works.
Is spanking abusive? Nupe. Not spanking is abusive. You teach a child that there are little repercussions for ating up and being disobedient. I beg you, bring back real disicpline and love.
Just my thoughts.

Boker Stainless Pocket Knife

Hello Folks,
I did a little advertising blurb on the Knife & Supply Company website referencing the Boker Stainless pocket knife. I’ve always been a big fan of Boker Knives and their Solengen made stainless steel. These knives last virtually longer than we do. I carry one of the Boker Speedlock knives quite often but have managed to get my hands on the automatic version.
I am working on a method to sell a few of the automatic knives that I have access too but am trying to do it legally. This is quite the chore due to the insane automatic knife laws that plague our country. Let’s not get into that right now, but I can sell legally to soldiers and cops and am working on a way to make this available.
Anyway, I wanted to feature a a Boker stainless pocket knife but have decided to feaute a few. Take a gander.

The Boker Jim Wagner Folder is one of my favorite fighting knives. This knife is made for the hard-core user to take on the toughest of tasks. The blade holds a good edge and the sharpening maintenance of this knife is painless.
I love the 440C black blade on this knife. It is perfect for night-ops and tactical use. This is the real warrior’s fighting knife. The serrated edge on this knife is very handy for a multitude of uses. Now, sharpening a serrated edge is a trick all to itself. We will go into that a little later on the Fighting Knife blog, so stay tuned.
The overall length of this knife is 9.13 inches with the blade measuring a sturdy 3.88 inches. This is the perfect size for a tactical use fighting knife. I think you will be impressed.

Part II - Survive With a Fighting Chance - Plan, Prepare, Be Ready
Posted on November 2, 2007
Survival planning is facing a reality that something could happen that would put you in a survival situation. Therefore, it is very important that you prepare and plan for survival.
Survival planning can be something as simple as ensuring that you have snow tires on your vehicle for the upcoming winter. It can also mean simply observing your surroundings in case an emergency situation arises. The observance of your immediate area, escape routes, people, nearby tools and anything else that would enhance your ability to survive is significant to survivability. Pay attention.
It is important to adopt the survival mentality. This goes against the grain of the culture and time that we live in, especially here in the United States. This country takes security for granted. Even after recent terrorist threats and attacks, the mentality has gone back to one of complacency and chosen ignorance.
A person with the survival mentality constantly combats the natural human desire to want to disregard danger due to the discomfort of thinking about it. This is foolish and stupid but very common.
A survivor is cut from a different cloth. His routine includes preparation, planning and constant awareness of his surroundings. He doesn’t necessarily lead a paranoid or uncomfortable life, he makes it a priority to maintain awareness.
Pay attention to those around you that have experienced combat, have been trained in survival and/or work in dangerous environments. The majority of these people are very attentive to their surroundings. It is important for their survival that they always observe what is going on around them.
Observing what is going on around you takes practice. There will be days that you are tired, weary or just plain beat down and do not want to think about anything. These days are fundamental for your survival training and growth. It is the hard days where we make the most improvement. On these days, force yourself to be aware. Fight the complacency and fatigue that confronts you.
What would happen if on one evening you are sitting in front of the TV with the family and suddenly your back door was kicked open and advancing into your living room advances an intruder wielding a handgun. Nobody in their right mind wants to think about a situation like this. Not only is your life being threatened, the lives of your loved ones are also at stake and in danger. This is where your survival preparedness kicks in or your lack of preparedness gets you or your loved one killed or hurt.
What do you do?
There are many theories on this. You’ll find that many theories are often based on an agenda or a fear. Many feel that retreat is necessary. Many feel that confronting a dangerous person with a weapon is wrong and should never be considered. Many believe it is wiser to allow the threat to have what he wants instead of confronting him. Let’s just be nice and maybe the bad guy will go away or even see the light and become a better person.
The above scenario is something you should plan for. This planning is critical for your survival in a situation as extreme as that. Is it likely that this would happen to you? No, it is not. But, what if it does? Are you prepared? You should be.
Preparedness is extremely important in confronting dangerous situations like the one I used as an example above. What do we need to do to prepare? Well, for example, in the above situation it would be extremely advantageous to have a handgun of your own in a concealed and safe location that you could retrieve in a situation like this.
Or, some background in the psychology of intruders would be handy. Do intruders that break into your home late at night with a handgun mean harm? I firmly believe that they would absolutely hurt you regardless of your level of cooperation. In my opinion, this is a life-threatening situation that requires lethal force to render. That is just my humble opinion.
Security is important for survival as well. If the backdoor was bolted and secured properly, you would have had more time to respond to this intruder’s attempted invasion. It would have taken longer to bust the door open giving you more time to respond. This response time would’ve allowed you to call 911, arm yourself and get your family to a safe location.
How many of you have ever gone to bed and forgot to lock the door or a window? This cannot ever be tolerated. That one simple mistake can cost you everything. You must, and I emphasize, MUST get home security right every single time. An intruder only has to get the break-in right once. And I assure you, he will.
Expect the worse, plan for a disaster, be ready for everything to go wrong, have a plan A, a plan B, a plan C and be ready for none of them to work. Plan and plan again and learn to adapt as you go. This is where preparedness and training go hand-in-hand. Allow survival to be the instinct that it already is.
Let’s talk about the survival kit.
The survival kit is your means of staying alive in an extreme situation. I personally, have one in my vehicle and one in my home. When I work, I also carry one in my duty bag.
Ensure that your survival kit container processes a few features. It should be waterproof, durable, contain a few compartments and it should be easy to carry or attach to your body.
What goes into a survival kit?
- First aid items
- Water purification tablets
- Fire starting tools and equipment
- Food procurement items
- Shelter items
- Signaling items
Let me give you some examples of these items. I would have things such as a lighter, waterproof matches, flint and steel, a metal match, snare wire, fishing hooks, fishing line, signaling mirror, compass, candles, a small lens, Oxytetracycline tablets for diarrhea and infection, bandages, water purification tablets, surgical blades, a solar blanket, condoms for water storage, chap stick, needle and thread, a knife, nylon cordage, energy bars, light sticks, flashlight and any other item that you would feel necessary to your survival.
I personally, would have a weapon in my survival kit or available nearby. You’re expected to obey the law of the land, so be careful in the manner and type of weapon that you add to your survival kit if you choose to do so. I cannot endorse breaking the law, but I do emphasize the necessity for you to be prepared to survive.
Stay alive.

Halloween - The Fighting Knife Way

I always enjoy Halloween. To me, it is a family and friends time of year. A lot of folks turn Halloween into an unpleasant experience with thoughts of what it really means and all of that crap.
What it really is, is a time for parents to have a little bit of fun with the kiddos. It is a time to interact with the community and just have a plain’o good time. Call me crazy, but I love Halloween.
So, in honor of Halloween, take a look at my Butcher Knife section and pick one out for that special someone.
I ran across these Halloween videos for your enjoyment. Take a gander.
I’m sure ya’ll have seen this one. If not, prepare yourself.
What a gal?!
And yes, the famous exorcist.
Well folks, have a happy Halloween!

Socialized Medicine

Good Morning,
Well, I’m back to work at my “real job”. I had a back injury about 7 months ago herniating two discs and finding out in the process that I have a condition called Spondylolisthesis. This condition is when one of the discs in your spine is basically off-set from the rest. This condition makes you back weak and does cause quite a bit of pain.
Being that the above was a work related injury, and I happen to be a government employee, my case was handled by the Department of Labor. All I can say is what a mess!
For seven months I’ve gone through physical therapy and been injected with several different epidurals and an assortment of other useless steroids and pain killers. I’ve been informed by a couple of DOL representatives amongst others experienced with back injuries that the process can take years to get approved.
I have not been able to choose the doctor or procedure that I would like to use as they must be approved by the Department of Labor. They have their own list of approved doctors that I must choose from. So, when I choose from this list, I wind up with waiting weeks for appointments, terrible office staff that treat you like the nasty part of a dog turd, lost paper work, lack of knowledge or concern about taking care of the necessary government forms properly and a slew of other problems that are too numerous and frustrating to get into.
In the meantime, my agency has been pressuring me to return to work or face termination. I’ve been told repeatedly how my back injury is a great inconvenience for them. Well, being that absolutely no progress has been made on my back injury, I have elected to live off of pain killers and return to work.
My surgeon has ruled that I have a list of permanent restrictions preventing me from return to my full duty position. So, I’m currently reassigned to “light duty”. My fate is in the hands of my employer. That ain’t good. If you have had any experience in employment with the feds, and I’m sure anywhere else, we all know that an injured worker is not good for the numbers; neither is keeping them on “light duty”.
I don’t know what is going to happen. I have my eyes open for other opportunities. The unfortunate part is that I’ve made a life of law enforcement and military type work. Employers in my profession don’t like bad backs so they don’t hire you. So, with that in mind, I’ve got to change my profession and way of life. I’ll be blunt, I’m very nervous about it.
Enough about me.
The above is a brief experience with the Department of Labor. This is an example of socialized medicine. Imagine if the entire country had to go through this process. Imagine if every treatment you needed had to be approved by a slew of government officials who are overworked and frustrated by the fact that you are pestering them with yet another case. Imagine the government giving you a list of their physicians that you are permitted to use.
In talking with many Canadian citizens, you will here much of this although the country seems to be very proud of its health care system.
Hate to leave you with that for the morning, but that’s what’s on my mind.
Take Care,
Cole
Benchmade Mini-Dejavoo | Another Great Looking Benchmade Collectible Knife

I really like the sleek look of the Benchmade Mini-Dejavoo collectible knife line. This particular model features the 3.23 inch blade made with S30V steel. The handles are 4.42 inches and made of tough G-10.
I don’t know if this would qualify as a fighting knife, but I guess if the stuff hit the fan, this would do just fine to get anyone out of a tight squeeze. I haven’t had the pleasure of playing with one of these yet or adding it to my collection. But, I can always cut for Benchmade; always top-notch knives.
This knife is solid black making it look like it should belong in the sock drawer of some secret ninja. For the commando and spec-ops folks out there, this is a perfect night operations knife. The bad guys certainly won’t see you out there trimming your toe nails.
