The Gorkha Warriors - Their Choice of Fighting Knife, The Kukri

One topic that interests me greatly, and something I want to start talking about within the Fighting Knife log, is warriors. I’m all about giving recognition to warriors in the form of a fighting knife salute, and now I want to get a bit more in depth about the warriors all over the world that actually wield the fighting knife to protect their countries and people.

Today, I ran across a little story about the troops of the 1/4 Gorkha Rifles. These warriors are martial arts experts and fighting knife warriors from Chandigarh, India. These Special Forces commandos put on a little show for their diamond jubilee celebrations. The demonstration they put on is known as the “Khukri dance”, which highlighted their martial tradition and expertise with the Khukri, the famous curved fighting knife of the Gorkhas.

Gurkha, also spelled as Gorkha, are people originating from Nepal and areas of North India, who take their name from the eighth century Hindu warrior-saint Guru Gorakhnath.

Gurkhas are known for their incredible history of courage and strength in the British Army’s Brigade of Gurkhas and the Indian Army’s Gorkha regiments.

The Gurkhas were designated by British officials as a “Martial Race”. This designation indicated “races” or peoples to be naturally hostile and violent in battle. The British recruited a great deal from these Martial Races for service in the colonial army.

These guys sound like pretty tough customers and I don’t know for sure if I would want to face them armed only with my fighting knife. Maybe I would accept the challenge if I had 1,000 yards and a nice Remington 700 scoped rifle.

This brings me to my favorite topic, especially when it comes to warriors. Let’s talk about their fighting knife. Now the Gorkhas prefer the Khukri; that’s one brutal fighting knife if you ask me. I assume they wanted to slice and dice their adversary instead of simply putting them down.

There ya go. If you have an army and need some violent and hostile Kukri fighting knife warriors, I suggest recruiting from the ranks of the Gorkhas.
