What is a Spyderco Byrd Brand Collectible Knife?

When I hear the name Byrd brand, I think of small birds bathing in the fountain at the park. Not quite the fighting knife image that you would think would come from a Spyderco knife.

There is a nice looking collectible knife by Spyderco knives at a very economical price. This line of knives is known as the Byrd brand knives. Spyderco designs and produces knives under this brand. These knives use are manufactured in China, allowing much lower prices while retaining much of Spyderco’s quality.

Many folks are put off by knives made in foreign countries such as China, and for Spyderco to do this as well can be quite depressing, to be honest. The good news is that the Byrd line is far less expensive and are pretty good knives. So, you just have to weigh it out for yourself.

To distinguish the brands, Byrd knives have a comet-shaped hole in the blade, rather than the trademark round hole in Spyderco knives. The first models, the Cara, Meadowlark, Flight, Pelican, and Crossbill, initially featured stainless steel handles. Newer Byrds have featured aluminum and G10.

I bought two of these knives because I wanted to check out the quality first hand, then abuse the crap out of them. I haven’t gotten to the abuse part yet, but I do like these little knives. They aren’t quite the fighting knife that I love, but they are good and practical knives.

About the only negative aspect to them is the lack of a solid click when the blade locks. When trying to open one handed, I had a slightly hard time ensuring that the blade was locked in place. This would take a bit of practice to render.

All-in-all, these are good, solid knives.
